Orcas

Orcas (Orcinus orca) are also known as killer whales. Orcas have an incredibly long lifespan of 30+ years. Orcas travel together in family pods headed by their mothers (matrilineal), and are the largest members of the dolphin family, reaching up to 30ft and can weigh between 4 and 6 tons. Transient orcas prey mainly on marine mammals, such as sea lions, seals, porpoises, and even other dolphin species and gray whales. Resident orcas, on the other hand, feed mainly on fish, especially salmon. Valdez is home to both resident and transient orca pods.

Viewing Locations

Orcas can be spotted in Prince William Sound by taking a boat charter or wildlife tour out of Valdez.
