Great Blue Herons

"Herons are big birds, but they're lightweights. Standing about three-and-a-half-feet tall, with a six-foot wingspan, a grown heron weighs just about six pounds," Riley Woodford, Alaska Department of Fish & Game

Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) may be seen in Valdez from the spring through the fall. They frequent areas near fresh or salt water where they can feed on small fish, and nest in spruce trees to raise their young.

Viewing Locations

Herons are usually spotted in open areas near the shore. The best viewing locations for herons around Valdez are on the Duck Flats and at the beach at the end of Homestead Trail.
