Canada Geese
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) may be spotted in Valdez. There are several sub-species of Canada geese in Alaska, and Dusky Canada geese (Branta canadensis occidentalis) are common in Valdez. Canada geese are in the Order Anseriformes, making them distant relatives to the ducks and swans that may also be seen in Valdez.
Behavior
Dusky Canada geese nest primarily in Alaska's Copper River Delta, a neighboring region to Prince William Sound. They may be spotted in Valdez in the spring and fall as they travel to or from the Copper River Delta. Dusky Canada geese winter in coastal areas of the Pacific North West, primarily Oregon's Willamette Valley.
Viewing Locations
Canada geese may be seen along the Valdez Duck Flats in spring and fall.
